In this study, data of a learning management system (LMS) named as ODTÜClass used by Middle East Technical University (METU) for many years, have been investigated with big data analysis methods. This study aimed to illuminate usage trends of ODTÜClass by investigating LMS data from different years and academic terms. We analyzed and reported Moodle™ based LMS data by investigating 6 academic terms from the academic years of 2014-2015 (Spring and Summer), 2015 – 2016 (Fall, Spring and Summer), and 2016 – 2017 (Fall). The fact that the learning management system used by METU instantly records all user actions has provided a very rich data to this study. The data analyzed in this study consisted of 16 million and 895 thousands of lines and the total size of the data was 44.7 gigabytes. The data analyzed with different software such as Elasticsearch, Kibana and Intelliboard. In this study, a) courses presented over the LMS, b) number of course participants, c) course access trends, and d) course usage trends have been investigated and reported in terms of various variables. The complete findings will be reported in the symposium.
