Analysing The Data On Social Media

The rapid developments in information and communication technologies has led to transformations in all areas of social life and social media has become an essential part of our daily lives. In our highly connected modern world, accessing and sharing the information or making conversations public/private, whenever we want and wherever we want became so easy with the help of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Twitter is a social networking site which can be also named as a microblogging service. Opposed to Facebook or MySpace, Twitter posts or updates can contain up to 160 characters at most. For this reason, communication on Twitter is faster because of the relatively short post lengths. Twitter uses tools such as hashtags, mention and advanced search options that allows users to coordinate their activities and share what is happening around with followers all around the world.  It is possible to gather data from social media in different ways, copying and pasting all the tweets on a file or using Twitter API that allows you to filter data according to geographic location, time, hashtag, user name may be given as example.

The purpose of this research is to show how messages move through social media platforms and analyse larger conversations on Twitter.
