Pros and Cons of Using WhatsApp platform in Education

As a collaborative platform for sharing information and content among the stake holders in educational settings WhatsApp is one of the most popular social media. It can not only be used as a convenient tool for communication between various stake holders such as teacher to teacher, student to student as well as teacher to student, but also for exchange of non-copyrighted contents between teachers and students. Since it is an open platform, once content is posted, the author cannot withdraw, modify, delete or prevent it from being forwarded to any other users. However it is an easy to use application for communication as well as sharing the latest academic updates and to discuss the subject matters, assignment details of the course. This qualitative study aims to explore the pros and cons of utilizing WhatsApp within tertiary level courses from the perspectives of prospective teachers. The data were collected from 60 undergraduate students who actively used WhatsApp within their courses and enrolled at Hacettepe University. The session will reflect on the perceptions and experiences of the participants regarding how to use WhatsApp efficiently and what are the pitfalls to be taken precautions against.
